Before

Store some bottled drinking water, and replace it before its best-before date.
Know where your inside stop tap is and check that it turns.
Keep hygiene supplies that don't need running water, such as wet wipes and hand sanitiser.
Find your water company's contact details and save them on paper.
If someone in your home needs water for medical reasons, join your water company's Priority Services Register.

During

If anyone is in immediate danger, call 999. Follow instructions from the emergency services and public authorities.

Check your water company's website or social media for updates and advice.
Follow any 'boil water' or 'do not drink' notice exactly.
Use stored water for drinking, cooking and medicine first.
Use water carefully: avoid baths, washing machines and dishwashers.
Check on neighbours who may need help, and tell your water company about anyone who is vulnerable.
If bottled water stations are set up, follow the water company's instructions.

After

Run the cold kitchen tap until the water runs clear when supply returns.
Follow any advice about flushing pipes or cleaning appliances.
Replace the water and supplies you used.
Update your plan with anything you learned.

People who need extra help

Water companies keep a Priority Services Register for customers who need extra help, for example because of a medical condition, disability or young children. People on the register can get bottled water delivered during supply problems.
