Power cuts

Before

Keep a battery or wind-up torch and spare batteries somewhere easy to find.
Save and write down the power-cut number: 105 in England, Scotland and Wales; 03457 643643 in Northern Ireland.
Keep a battery or wind-up radio and note useful radio frequencies.
Charge power banks and test your cables.
Ask your providers how landlines, telecare or connected health equipment will work during a power cut.
Check whether you can join the Priority Services Register for extra help.
Plan safe alternatives for heating, cooking, lighting and medical equipment.
Keep bottled water and food that doesn't need cooking.

During

If anyone is in immediate danger, call 999. Follow instructions from the emergency services and public authorities.

Keep fridge and freezer doors closed as much as possible.
Save battery power and use text messages if networks are busy.

Switch off sensitive equipment if advised, leaving one light on so you know when power returns.

Check refrigerated and frozen food against current food-safety advice.
Restart equipment safely and check alarms, clocks and heating controls.
Recharge power banks and replace used supplies.
Update your family plan if any contact or arrangement didn't work.

If someone in your home relies on powered medical equipment, needs extra help or has young children, join the Priority Services Register. Your electricity network can then contact you before planned power cuts and give priority support.
